Economic Development Precincts

Sutherland Shire has a choice of suitable precincts in which to establish a business.

Caringbah

Caringbah centre has served the needs of the Shire community for many decades. Caringbah has major supermarkets and speciality shops and is becoming a service provision centre for the nearby Sutherland District Hospital and its associated medical services.

Growth around this precinct in recent years has led to the centre requiring a major review by council. Future plans for Caringbah may focus on residential development, medical services and support activities and speciality retailers.

Cronulla

Cronulla is southern Sydney's original beach lifestyle suburb and the only one with rail links. Cronulla CBD has fantastic shopping, glorious beaches, modern cafes and restaurants and night clubs. Cronulla has a promenade of shops from the railway station through to The Kingsway and a restaurant focus along Gerrale Street, overlooking South Cronulla Beach.  Overnight accommodation is also available at popular hotels such as Rydges and The Quest.

Engadine

Engadine Centre is a quality district shopping centre with a balanced mix of retail, commercial, residential, community and leisure uses. The centre caters primarily for the needs of the local community. As at 4 September council is completing an upgrade of Engadine's primary shopping centre strip and creating a new community park and playground.

Gymea

Gymea was named after the beautiful Gymea Lily. This suburb is undergoing a revitalisation while retaining speciality shops, a pleasant meeting place with coffee shops, cafes, serviced by efficient transport links. Gymea is also home to Sutherland Shire's renowned Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre.

Kirrawee

The Kirrawee employment zone is the Shire's second largest industrial zone, at 47 hectares. It is located in the heart of the Shire, and well served by public transport.  The Kirrawee Employment Zone features traditional manufacturing, construction, transport and storage operations but is also well known for its motor vehicle sales, service and repair sector.

Kirrawee village shopping strip meets the needs of all age groups and shoppers, from traditional shops to the emerging café culture, as well as recreational activities. This area does not have high rise development, but its open space and recreational areas make it an ideal place to relax.  Kirrawee is well services by a railway station and public bus networks.

Menai Marketplace

The Menai Marketplace is an outstanding retail development located at Allison Crescent, Menai, meeting the needs of residents and businesses in the Shire's west, as well as serving retail needs for nearby south western Sydney suburbs.  Menai Marketplace is anchored by a Big W and Woolwoorths Supermarket supported by approximately 45 speciality outlets. The centre was open in 1994.

Miranda

Miranda is the largest retail/business centre in Sutherland Shire and draws shoppers from all over southern Sydney. It is a well-known central location featuring Westfield shopping centre, Greater Union Cinemas and a host of surrounding retail speciality shops. Miranda meets every shopper's specialist functions and general leisure shopping needs.

Sutherland

Sutherland is the Civic and Administrative heart of the Shire, with council, Government offices, commercial businesses, community entertainment centre, schools, rail hub and bus interchange and a growing population, centred around civic parks and a traditional but well serviced shopping village.  Due to increasing residential capacity over the past decade, Sutherland is experiencing an increase in economic activity and commercial possibility.

Taren Point

The Taren Point employment zone is one of the largest industrial areas in southern Sydney, covering 165 hectares. Taren Point is uniquely placed, on the southern shores of Botany Bay, with easy access to Sydney's Airport, Port Botany and Sydney's CBD.  The Employment Zone lies between Taren Point Road, Captain Cook Drive and the shores of Woolooware Bay. It is both home to a broad mix of economic activity including many businesses engaged in traditional and modern manufacturing, warehousing, transport and construction activities in addition a large section of Taren Point road provides speciality retailing and bulky goods retailing.
